Thermal Challenges in Spacecraft Design

Ron Behee has been involved in thermal modeling since 1973 and has worked mostly in the aerospace industry modeling spacecraft, aircraft, missiles, and electronic packages. In the late 1980's Ron began developing thermal modeling tools and started his own consulting company. In 1995 he bought Network Analysis Inc, the company that developed his favorite thermal analyzer SINDA/G. For the next 13 years he continued to develop thermal modeling tools and interfaces to graphical modelers as he ran Network Analysis Inc. with customers in 25 countries. In 2008 MSC Software acquired his company, and his team of developers became part of MSC. Now he continues to direct the development of advanced thermal products and to teach classes in thermal modeling.

Spacecraft thermal simulations need to address several challenges like model size, run times, complex missions and thermal contacts in the spacecraft. Engineers can now benefit from the enhanced link to Thermica in Patran, which allows the entire model to be set up within Patran, and take advantage of Thermica’s powerful mission planning module, including a link to Satellite Tool Kit (STK). Some of the problems and solutions related to spacecraft thermal design discussed and demonstrated include:

  • Set up of complex orbits with missions involving multiple flight phases such as battery changing, wait states, or downloads.
  • Analyses with different radiation enclosures and reuse of existing results to save simulation time.
  • Review of different thermal radiation solver methods that can be used in different enclosures, such as high speed hemicube method, and ray tracing routing to model specular bouncing of solar heating.
  • Modeling thermal contacts, multi-layer insulation (MLI) and thermostat powered heaters along with the new batch feature to allow Thermica runs to run in the background, improving simulation accuracy and user productivity.
